What you will learn
In this chapter, we discuss ultrasound imaging in the pediatric trauma victim. As part of the FAST (Focused Assessment with Sonography for Trauma) scan, you will learn to recognize blood in the peritoneal cavity, pericardial sac, and thoracic space. The discussion then moves beyond bleeding and addresses another important thoracic injury: pneumothorax. The chapter wraps up with a thoughtful discussion of the test characteristics and the recommended role of the FAST exam in your trauma resuscitations.
