New pPOCUS Training Program Builds on Digital Foundation by 123sonography

Vienna, 5 August 2025 – Structured Online Education as the Basis for Prehospital Ultrasound Competence

In recent years, ultrasound has increasingly established itself as a critical diagnostic tool in prehospital emergency care. In response to this development, the Austrian Society for Disaster and Emergency Medicine (ÖNK), in collaboration with the Vienna Ambulance Service and 123sonography, has developed a comprehensive training program for prehospital Point-of-Care Ultrasound (pPOCUS).

The goal of this multi-phase program is to provide prehospital personnel, emergency physicians, and related medical professionals with evidence-based, practice-oriented training for the effective use of ultrasound in emergency settings. The course is CME-accredited and, when combined with the practical modules, meets the requirements for certification according to ÖGUM, DEGUM, or SGUM (Level 1).

At the core of the curriculum is the digital training component delivered by 123sonography, which forms Phase 1 and provides the theoretical foundation for the entire program:

  • Modular structure across six chapters
  • In-depth coverage of physiological and pathological concepts tailored to the prehospital context
  • Case-based learning using real emergency scenarios
  • Demonstrations of key ultrasound protocols
  • Knowledge checks via online quizzes
  • CME certification

All content is developed to be scientifically sound and practically relevant, aligned with current international standards. The online learning experience is further enhanced by live ride-alongs with the Vienna Ambulance Service, directly integrated into the course material.

Phases 2 to 4 build on this foundation with simulator-based training, hands-on practice in small groups, and supervised skill application. The practical emergency ultrasound component is based on the standards of ÖGUM, DEGUM, and SGUM.

In Phase 5, participants must independently document 50 symptom-oriented emergency ultrasound cases—a requirement for certification.

Phase 6 concludes the program with a final practical exam and offers participants the opportunity to earn Level 1 certification from ÖGUM, SGUM, or DEGUM.
