THE COVID-19 BURDEN FOR HEALTH CARE PROFESSIONALS

Researchers from the Medical University of Vienna in cooperation with 123sonography publish the results of a large online survey in the European Journal of Internal Medicine.

Vienna, 09 March 2021 – The survey which was performed in 3090 health care professionals (HCP) during the first wave of the pandemic shows that a high percentage of HCP had COVID-19, especially in countries where the medical system “collapsed”. In this group 9% of HCP were infected with COVID-19. In addition, 92% of the participants reported of personal fears and concerns related to the pandemic. Matthias Schneider the first author of the study emphasises that it is important to protect health care workers in a pandemic and to provide psychological support when needed: “Many of the health care workers included in this survey either had a COVID-19 infection or knew colleagues which were infected.” Specific concerns were related to the fear of being infected, losing a family member and the negative impact of the COVID 19 pandemic on the individual career”. The success of the study also demonstrates the potential of 123sonography, with its large international community to obtain important insights related to relevant topics such as the COVID-19 pandemic.
