2.1 Introduction

The procedure for obtaining ultrasound images differs from that used to perform CT, MRI or scintigrams. While a semi-automated approach does all the work in the latter modalities, in ultrasound it is basically YOU who creates the individual images. A CT or MRI scans through the entire heart (and every view can be reconstructed later from the data set), whereas an echocardiography requires that you capture the important views during image acquisition. Thus, in a way it is much like photography.

However, we have established standard views the investigator may perform: these make it easier to compare studies. The standard views will be the main focus of this chapter.
Ultrasound is similar to photography in one further notable aspect: the quality of the images is largely determined by YOU. Echocardiography is a difficult technique; it takes substantial practice to become an expert. Obviously a book cannot serve as a substitute for "hands-on" training, but it can provide valuable tips and tricks as to how you could improve your imaging skills. That will be the second focus of this chapter.

Don't blame the scanner or "patient characteristics" for poor image quality.
