The dP/dt is a good way to assess the contractility of the left ventricle using echocardiography. In this echo demonstration, you will learn how to obtain a good signal, how to measure the dP/dt and what the pitfalls of this method are. It's only 1:48 minutes long. You can probably hold your breath longer (unless you dP/dt is below 500mmHg/sec). Still, time well invested.
